Sheepdog Trials 2026
The Sheepdog Trials at Ryedale Show are kindly organised by the Ryedale Sheepdog Society. The trials will be held against the beautiful backdrop of Helmsley Castle, by the main entrance to Duncombe Park, to commence at 9am.
A free shuttle will run between the main showground and the sheepdog trials throughout the day.
🐑 About the Sheepdog Trials
The Sheepdog Trials are a traditional and much-loved part of the Ryedale Show, showcasing the remarkable skill, intelligence and teamwork between shepherd and dog.
Trials begin at 9am with a pause at lunchtime while the collies go head to head in the dog show, resuming approx 1pm until 5pm.
Visitors can watch experienced handlers guide their dogs through a series of tasks designed to demonstrate the practical skills used in everyday sheep farming. Trials test the dog’s ability to gather, control and manoeuvre sheep calmly and accurately, responding to whistles and commands from the handler, often from considerable distances.
The competition highlights the natural instincts, training and discipline of working sheepdogs, with competitors travelling from across the region to take part. For many visitors, the sheepdog trials provide a fascinating insight into traditional hill farming and the important role working dogs continue to play in agriculture today.
Whether you are familiar with sheepdog work or watching for the first time, the trials are always an enjoyable and impressive spectacle for all ages.
